THE COLLEGE OF MICRONESIA-LAND GRANT (COM LG) RESEARCH PROGRAM IS COMMITTED TO ADVANCING APPLIED, INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH THAT ST RENGTHENS SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURAL SYSTEMS, ENHANCES FOOD SECURITY, AND BUILDS COMMUNITY RESILIENCE ACROSS THE FEDERATED STATES OF MICRONESIA, THE REPUBLIC OF PALAU, AND THE REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS. SUPPORTED BY HATCH ACT FUNDING, THIS PROGRAM ALIGNS WITH THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE (NIFA) CAPACITY-BUILDING GOALS FOR INSULAR AREAS. COM-LG RESEARCH INTEGRATES TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE WITH SCIENTIFIC INNOVATION TO PRODUCE ACTIONABLE SOLUTIONS THAT ARE ECONOMICALLY VIABLE, ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND, SOCIALLY INCLUSIVE, CULTURALLY GROUNDED, AND TECHNOLOGICALLY ADAPTIVE. THE OVERARCHING GOAL IS TO DEVELOP EVIDENCE-BASED APPROACHES THAT ENHANCE PRODUCTIVITY AND SUSTAINABILITY IN AGRICULTURE, AQUACULTURE, AND NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT. RESEARCH ACTIVITIES INCLUDE GENERATING AND DISSEMINATING SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE TO IMPROVE FOOD PRODUCTION, PROCESSING, AND VALUEADDING SYSTEMS; STRENGTHENING ADAPTIVE CAPACITIES TO ADDRESS CLIMATE VARIABILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION; ADVANCING COMMUNITY HEALTH AND NUTRITION OUTCOMES THROUGH INTEGRATED RESEARCH AND OUTREACH; AND SUPPORTING POLICY FORMULATION THROUGH THE GENERATION OF RELIABLE, CONTEXT-SPECIFIC DATA. OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS, COM LG'S APPLIED AND COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH WILL FOCUS ON SIX CRITICAL ISSUE AREAS CONSISTENT WITH THE NIFA PLAN OF WORK FRAMEWORK: FOOD INSECURITY AND LOCAL FOOD PRODUCTION, SUSTAINABLE AQUACULTURE DEVELOPMENT, YOUTH AND FAMILY WELL-BEING, ENVIRONMENTAL RESILIENCE, FOOD AND WATERBORNE ILLNESSES, AND CHILDHOOD OBESITY AND NUTRITION. A CORE PRINCIPLE OF THE PROGRAM IS THE INTEGRATION OF INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE WITH MODERN SCIENCE. THE RESEARCH PROGRAM CURRENTLY COMPRISES 16 RESEARCH POSITIONS STRATEGICALLY LOCATED ACROSS MICRONESIA, SPANNING A GEOGRAPHIC REGION OF OVER 2,500 MILES. PARTNER INSTITUTIONS INCLUDE THE COLLEGE OF MICRONESIA-FSM, PALAU COMMUNITY COLLEGE, AND THE COLLEGE OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS, EACH CONTRIBUTING TO REGIONALLY TAILORED RESEARCH INITIATIVES UNDER THE COM LG UMBRELLA. OF THE SIX NIFA PROGRAM AREAS, 12 RESEARCHERS ARE ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN THREE MAJOR THEMATIC AREAS: AGRICULTURE, AQUACULTURE, AND FOOD PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY, WITH 20 ACTIVE NIFA-APPROVED HATCH PROJECTS. RESEARCH IS CONDUCTED COLLABORATIVELY ACROSS INSTITUTIONS AND DISCIPLINES TO ADDRESS REGION-WIDE CHALLENGES. ONGOING EFFORTS EMPHASIZE THE VALIDATION, DOCUMENTATION, AND ENHANCEMENT OF TRADITIONAL FARMING AND AQUACULTURE PRACTICES THROUGH PARTICIPATORY, COMMUNITY-BASED APPROACHES. THE PROGRAM ALSO INCORPORATES INNOVATIVE AGRICULTURAL TECHNOLOGIES, INCLUDING PRECISION FARMING TOOLS, ENVIRONMENTALLY RESILIENT CROP VARIETIES, AND SITE-SPECIFIC AQUACULTURE SYSTEMS DESIGNED TO INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY WHILE MINIMIZING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT. ADDITIONALLY, RESEARCH ON PRESERVING AND DEVELOPING INDIGENOUS FOOD TECHNOLOGIES IS BEING UNDERTAKEN TO STRENGTHEN FOOD SECURITY, PROMOTE LOCAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP, AND IMPROVE THE OVERALL HEALTH AND WELL BEING OF MICRONESIAN COMMUNITIES. RESULTS WILL BE REPORTED THROUGH THE NIFA REPOR TING SYSTEM AND EVALUATED USING A ROBUST MONITORING FRAMEWORK TO ENSURE CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT AND MEASURABLE IMPACT.
