| Department of Energy | THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP A CERAMIC MATRIX COMPOSITE (CMC) FABRICATION METHOD TO PROVIDE LOW-COST CMC FOR CONCENTRATED SOLAR POWER (CSP) RECEIVERS RUNNING AT 800 *C OR EVEN HIGHER. IN THIS PROJECT, A NOVEL CERAMIC MATRIX COMPOSITE (CMC) MANUFACTURING METHOD WILL BE DEVELOPED TO PRODUCE AFFORDABLE CMC BY ELIMINATING THE INFILTRATION PROCESS CURRENTLY USED IN CMC PRODUCTION. THE GREEN BODY OF THE CMC, CARBON FIBER REINFORCED PLASTIC, WILL BE MADE BY USING AN INNOVATIVE RESIN THAT IS FILLED WITH A HIGH CONTENT OF CERAMIC PARTICLES TO INCREASE ITS CERAMIC YIELD. THE GREEN BODY WILL THEN BE PYROLYZED TO FABRICATE CMCS AS DENSE AS CMC MADE WITH THE CONVENTIONAL INFILTRATION PROCESS. THE FABRICATED CMCS WILL BE USED IN A CONCENTRATED SOLAR POWER (CSP) RECEIVER DESIGN TO IMPROVE ITS TOTAL SOLAR-TO-ELECTRIC EFFICIENCY BY ENABLING THE USE OF SUPERCRITICAL CO2 AS A HIGH EFFICIENCY WORKING FLUID WITH A HIGH WORKING TEMPERATURE OF >800 *C. A TECHNOECONOMIC ANALYSIS (TEA) WILL BE IMPLEMENTED TO EVALUATE THE CMC COMPONENT MANUFACTURING COST AND ITS RECEIVER CONSTRUCTION COST. THE RECEIVER CONSTRUCTION COST WILL BE COMPARED TO CONVENTIONAL METAL ALLOYS. PARC’S CMC FABRICATION IS EXPECTED TO MAKE CMC SO AFFORDABLE THAT EVEN COST-SENSITIVE APPLICATIONS LIKE CSP CAN USE IT. | $2,173,441 |
