VIRGINIA COOPERATIVE EXTENSION (VCE), A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN VIRGINIA POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE AND STATE UNIVERSITY (VT) AND VIRGINIA STATE UNIVERSITY (VSU), THE VIRGINIA AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATION (VAES) AND THE VIRGINIA STATE UNIVERSITY AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH STATION (VSUARS), ENABLES PEOPLE TO IMPROVE THEIR LIVES THROUGH RESEARCH AND EDUCATION USING SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE FOCUSED ON THE ISSUES AND NEEDS OF THE CITIZENS OF VIRGINIA. AUDIENCES ARE INVOLVED IN DESIGNING, IMPLEMENTING, AND EVALUATING NEEDSDRIVEN PROGRAMS. VCE, VAES AND VSUARS ARE DYNAMIC ORGANIZATIONS WHICH STIMULATE POSITIVE PERSONAL AND SOCIETAL CHANGE LEADING TO MORE PRODUCTIVE LIVES, FAMILIES, FARMS, AND FORESTS, AS WELL AS A BETTER ENVIRONMENT IN URBAN AND RURAL COMMUNITIES. VCE'S GOALS ARE TO: 1) DEVELOP AND TRANSFER NEW KNOWLEDGE IN APPLIED AND BASIC LIFE SCIENCES, 2) PERFORM RELEVANT, OBJECTIVE, AND TIMELY RESEARCH 3) IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR COMMUNITIES AND CITIZENS IN THE COMMONWEALTH, 4) USE A SYSTEMS APPROACH TO PROGRAMMING, WITH TASK-ORIENTED WORK TEAMS THAT RESPOND TO THE NEEDS OF INDIVIDUALS, GROUPS, AND ORGANIZATIONS, 5) WORK WITH AUDIENCES WHO NEED FOCUSED AND SPECIALIZED ATTENTION, 6) FULLY INTEGRATE A CULTURALLY DIVERSE PAID AND VOLUNTEER STAFF IN PLANNING, IMPLEMENTING, AND EVALUATING PROGRAMS, AND 7) RECRUIT AND COLLABORATE WITH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE PARTNERS TO BETTER UTILIZE RESOURCES, HEIGHTEN IMPACT, AND REACH A MORE DIVERSE AUDIENCE. NEW AWARD - VIRGINIA POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE AND STATE UNIVERSITY CONTROL NUMBER: 3499-1536 PROJECT TITLE: ''DUAL-USE CONVERTER-IN-FLUID INTEGRATED VERTICAL-STACK KILO-AMPERE SIC SUBMODULE VALVE FOR NEXT GENERATION HIGH-DENSITY HVDC CONVERTER STATION'' HIGH-VOLTAGE DIRECT CURRENT (HVDC) POWER TRANSMISSION IS CRUCIAL FOR DELIVERING ELECTRICITY EFFICIENTLY OVER LONG DISTANCES. HOWEVER, CURRENT HVDC CONVERTER STATIONS ARE LARGE, EXPENSIVE, AND INEFFICIENT. THIS PROJECT PROPOSES A REVOLUTIONARY APPROACH TO SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE THE SIZE AND COST OF THESE STATIONS WHILE IMPROVING THEIR EFFICIENCY. OUR TEAM WILL DEVELOP A NOVEL MEDIUM-VOLTAGE (MV) SILICON CARBIDE (SIC)-BASED SUBMODULE VALVE, DESIGNED TO REPLACE CONVENTIONAL HVDC POWER ELECTRONICS WITH A MORE COMPACT AND EFFICIENT SOLUTION. THE KEY INNOVATIONS INCLUDE: HIGH-DENSITY SIC POWER MODULES – THESE ADVANCED MODULES WILL ENABLE A 10× REDUCTION IN POWER LOSS COMPARED TO EXISTING TECHNOLOGY, IMPROVING ENERGY EFFICIENCY. DUAL-USE CONVERTER IN DIELECTRIC FLUID TECHNOLOGY – INSTEAD OF BULKY AIR-INSULATED VALVE HALLS, OUR APPROACH SUBMERGES POWER MODULES IN A DIELECTRIC COOLING FLUID, ELIMINATING THE NEED FOR LARGE COOLING AND INSULATION SYSTEMS, REDUCING SPACE REQUIREMENTS BY OVER 10×. THE LONG-TERM GOALS OF THIS INTEGRATED PROJECT ARE TO: 1) PREVENT AND REDUCE CHILDHOOD OBESITY THROUGH IMPROVED PARENTING PRACTICES AND HOME ENVIRONMENT RELATED TO OBESITY;2) EXPAND EXTENSION CAPACITY FOR COMMUNITY-ENGAGED RESEARCH AND COLLABORATIVE PROGRAMMING WITH FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATIONS; 3) ENHANCE EXTENSION STRATEGIES FOR RECRUITING AND TRAINING COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS TO EXTEND EXTENSION REACH; AND 4) TRAIN FUTURE HEALTH PROFESSIONALS TO PROVIDE CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITY-BASED HEALTH PROGRAMS. RESEARCH, EXTENSION AND EDUCATION OBJECTIVES SUPPORT EACH GOAL. THE PROJECT ADDRESSES THE AFRI PROGRAM AREA PRIORITY FOR APPLICATIONS SUBMITTED IN RESPONSE TO INTEGRATED APPROACHES TO PREVENT CHILDHOOD OBESITY (CHILDHOOD OBESITY PREVENTION CHALLENGE AREA). THE PROJECT WILL TARGET THE SCHOOL-AGED SUBSET (AGES 6-10, FIRST THROUGH FIFTH GRADE) OF THE TARGET AGE RANGE OF AGES 2-19. THE 14-MONTH RANDOMIZED CONTROL TRIAL DESIGN OF THE RESEARCH COMPONENT WILL GENERATE NEW KNOWLEDGE REGARDING EFFECTIVENESS OF A INTEGRATED FAMILY-BASED INTERVENTION ENHANCED WITH SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL (CHURCH) SUPPORT TO PREVENT OBESITY IN SCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN. THE PROJECT WILL ADDRESS HEALTH DISPARITIES VIA THE COMMUNITY-ENGAGED APPROACH IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BLACK CHURCHES. THE INTERDISCIPLINARY AND CROSS-PROGRAM NATURE OF THE PROJECT PROMOTES ATTENTION TO OTHER AFRI PRIORITIES INCLUDING INTEGRATION OF RESEARCH, EXTENSION AND EDUCATION COMPONENTS AND INVOLVEMENT OF 4-H AND EXTENSION. UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS FROM TWO LAND-GRANT UNIVERSITIES WILL BE TRAINED ON BEST PRACTICES FOR COMMUNITY-ENGAGED RESEARCH AND OUTREACH. STANDARD EXTENSION PROGRAM EVALUATION IN ADDITION TO RESEARCH DATA WILL PROVIDE MAXIMUM BENEFIT TO EXTENSION PROGRAMS AND PERSONNEL BY PROVIDING IMPACT DATA FOR ANNUAL REPORTING, FURTHER SUPPORTING THE EXTENSION COMPONENT OF THE INTEGRATED PROJECT.
